The Maya High Flyers built a big enough lead at yesterday’s Semis Game 2 to survive a fiery BanKo Perlas Spikers’ rally, 28-26, 25-16, 25-27, 25-27, 15-12, and extend their semifinals series to a do-or-die Game 3 in the 2018 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference.
Maya was actually ahead after two sets, before the opposing team came roaring back to tie the match 11-all in the final frame. The resurgent Grethcel Soltones then ended BanKo’s run with her last three hits, to claim the victory and finish with a tournament-high 22 points.
Soltones told ESPN, “We didn’t want our campaign to end today so we really wanted to win.”
The three-time NCAA MVP and American import Tess Rountree (37 markers on 27 attacks, 5 aces, and 2 kill blocks) got ample support this time around from fellow reinforcement Shelby Sullivan (14 pts) and the FEU pairing of Celine Domingo and Jerrili Malabanan (16 combined).
The High Flyers survived another monster performance from the Perlas Spikers’ import tandem of Kia Bright (35) and Jutarat Montripila (23).
This was the Maya’s first win against BanKo in the conference, after falling to their bitter rivals in the preliminary round and their semis opener.
The High Flyers hopes to sustain momentum and advance to the Finals in their PVL debut, which will be decided in the winner-take-all match on Friday, July 6.
