The Maya High Flyers laid it all out on the floor but weren’t able to prevent the Creamline Cool Smashers from winning three straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-11, and the championship trophy in Game 2 of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Season 2 Reinforced Conference Finals.
Maya, led by American import Tess Rountree (12 points) and Gretchel Soltones (6), looked exhausted against Creamline (12 blocks to 2)—perhaps still feeling the effects of its grueling semis series vs eventual 2nd Runner-Up BanKo Perlas Spikers.
Rountree and Lizlee Ann Pantone (12 excellent digs) being named Best Import and Best Libero of the conference wasn’t enough to energize the High Flyers, who capped their maiden campaign with a respectable 1st Runner-Up finish.
The Cool Smashers, after managing only third place in back-to-back tournaments, followed up on their inspired play from the opening match, and didn’t let up one bit until the waning moments of the closer.
PVL 1st Best Outside Spiker Alyssa Valdez (19 markers) got ample help from Thai reinforcement Kuttika Kaewpin (12) and Best Opposite Spiker Michele Gumabao (12). Best Setter Julia Morado (29 excellent sets) was hailed Finals MVP.
Still, that was a heck of a job, High Flyers! These Volleybelles surely have a bright future ahead of them.
