Must-Watch Movies at Cinemalaya 2018

The Cinemalaya Film Festival is finally back with film genres ranging from thriller to comedy. Moviegoers are set to experience exceptional visual storytelling with this year’s entries!

#1 Liway by Kip Oebanda

Based on a real-life event, the tale of the fairy Liway serves as the mother’s shield to keep her child away from trauma. Day, the mother portrayed by Glaiza de Castro, does everything to protect her child Dakip from the harsh realities of life inside a makeshift prison. Towards the end of Martial Law, living as a detainee gets more difficult and it gives them the risk of not seeing their child again.

#2 Distance by Perci Intalan

From experiencing loss of a loved one, Liza played by Iza Calzado, goes the distance to reconnect with her ex-husband and children after abandoning them for years. The reasons behind what kept them apart will be revealed as Liza heals the wounds from the past.

#3 ML by Benedict Mique Jr

Three sheltered teenagers, who believe that the Marcos Regime wasn’t that horrendous, get a taste of Martial Law (ML) as they interview a retired colonel living in the neighborhood. Starring Eddie Garcia as the colonel, the lives of the teenagers are at risk.

#4 Kuya Wes by James Mayo

Singer and actor Ogie Alcasid takes on the spotlight as Kuya Wes, a modest remittance clerk who’s being ignored by his family. A regular customer at the remittance center named Erika is the only person brightening up Kuya Wes’ day. When the OFW husband of Erika ended their relationship, Kuya Wes grabs the opportunity to give help and gain attention. Unexpected things happen as their relationship develops.

#5 School Service by Louie Ignacio

Inspired by true incidents, an 8-year old student Maya is the latest victim of the “School Service”, a vehicle used for child exploitation. Ai Ai Delas Alas, the woman who heads the syndicate for child exploitation, fooled Maya in finding her way home and got involved in the dirty business.

#6 The Lookout by Afi Africa

Lester Quiambao, a victim of child trafficking, is on the lookout for his mother and her live-in partner to make them pay for what they did. It’s a painful story of betrayal and revenge.

#7 Pan de Salawal by Che Espiritu

A lonely baker named Sal, sick with chronic kidney stones, wants to put an end to his life. He begins to hope for a miracle when he suddenly meets Aguy, a wanderer in Manila who heals sick people.

#8 Mamang by Denise O’Hara

Mamang is an old woman who desires to be reconnected with her unmarried middle-aged son as she ages. Although, the more she struggles, the more her case worsens as she relives the painful past.

#9 Musmos na Sumibol sa Gubat ng Digma by Iar Lionel Arondaing

The chaos in Mindanao brings two young Muslims in a forest where they spend seven days together. The incident eventually leads them to find love and happiness despite the clash between their families.

#10 Kung Paano Hinihintay Ang Dapithapon (Waiting for the Sunset) by Carlo Enciso Catu

Teresa and Celso, an unmried couple living a monotonous life, suddenly receives a call from the woman’s estranged husband Benedicto who’s experiencing sickness and seeking forgiveness. As Benedicto seeks treatment, he finds ways to rekindle relationship with his son with Teresa.
