There is now more evidence than ever that “you are what you eat”. A new field called Nutritional Psychiatry states that how the types of food we eat can directly affect our mental and emotional states.
Here are a few comfort food options that can provide a quick boost to your current mood and get you through the day!
I feel: Stressed from work
On days that you have to tackle a mile-long to-do list, the best meal to get is one with a balance of carbohydrates and proteins. The human body breaks down both into simpler compounds to generate energy and keep itself running.
Grab a Sausage McMuffin with Egg and coffee for breakfast to power your body until lunchtime!
I feel: Brokenhearted
A happy stomach makes a happy mind, and nothing makes people happier than chocolate. Eating chocolate triggers the release of neurotransmitters like endorphins into your brain, which results in feelings of happiness or euphoria.
There’s no reason to feel guilty about giving in to that Hot Fudge Sundae.
I feel: Low on energy
The answer to combating the sleepy and sluggish feeling you get in the early afternoon is eating a smaller midday meal followed by several smaller snacks and plenty of water throughout the afternoon.
Pick up a Filet-o-Fish for a light protein and iron-rich lunch.
I feel: Caught up in a big project
Keep yourself focused on urgent tasks with a good cup of coffee. Its caffeine content will help keep you alert and focused.
In addition, timing your coffee break to specific periods of the day (in lieu of drinking more coffee) keeps from disrupting your sleep cycle. Nutritionist Lyndi Cohen recommends that you time your coffee break (McCafe Espresso, anyone?) from 10 AM to 12 noon or before 2 PM.
I feel: Tired
After a night of insufficient sleep, starting your day with a large and high-fat breakfast of eggs and other protein helps. Add three to five smaller helpings of protein throughout the day and you’ve got the energy you need to function properly, at least until you can get a good night’s rest.
Come in time for the breakfast menu to enjoy a classic Longanisa with Rice!
