What’s New at E3: 5 New Titles for Every Type of Gamer

In case you missed it, the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2018 (E3) has come and gone unraveling its huge arsenal of blockbuster game titles. Many of our most beloved games are getting updated with either sequels or reboots, some slated to arrive as early as September of this year. Companies like Microsoft and Nintendo are pulling out all the stops at this year’s gaming convention, in the process showcasing new development teams and gaming tech alongside their cutting-edge games.

With so many new games and technologies all competing for the public’s attention, you might lose track of which games you want to spend money and time on when they come out.

To make this year’s E3 announcements easier to digest, we’ve listed 5 upcoming game recommendations to suit the kind of gamer you are.

If You’re a Mobile Gamer—Elder Scrolls Blades

Bethesda released one other announcement at E3 already (possibly the most breathtaking teaser of the event so far), but another major development of the studio that brought us Skyrim is their upcoming Elder Scrolls Blades.

This first-person adventure RPG is coming to mobile devices first, and it will be free on launch. Though the company does plan to release the online hack-and-slasher on as many devices as possible (including PCs and VR platforms), it will be designed around the smartphone you probably always have with you.

Considering how successful the developers of The Elder Scrolls series have been with their games in the past, we can’t imagine a better time to own a smartphone.

If You’re Competitive—Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

There’s nothing like a good fighting game when it comes to putting strain on the closest of friends. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the latest and greatest evolution of Nintendo’s very competitive series of mixed-and-matched heroes and villains.

Choose characters—like Mario, Link, Samus Aran, Yoshi, and Pikachu—from Nintendo’s long history of classic games and pit them against each other in dynamic brawls. When you’re playing this game with a group of friends, winning feels like the ultimate gaming achievement.

This title comes out on December 7 this year, in time for Christmas, for the Nintendo Switch.

If You’re Nostalgic—Kingdom Hearts III

We probably didn’t have to mention this title because of all the hype its fans have generated around it online. Kingdom Hearts is a beloved series which merges the high fantasy worlds of Final Fantasy with some of the most resonant characters and stories from Disney.

The third installment of the franchise has been a decade in the making, but it’s finally coming in January 2019 to the Playstation 4. We don’t know exactly what will happen to our favorite characters in the series, but based on the new worlds and characters we’ve seen in the trailers, it will be a game to remember—for at least another decade.

If You Like it First-Person—Halo: Infinite

The XBOX One is getting an update to one of its biggest titles ever. Halo: Infinite pushes the envelope yet again, merging the genres of sci-fi and shooter in a way that’s always felt greater than the sum of its parts.

There’s no release date for this installment yet, but it’s worth keeping an ear to the ground to become one of the first to experience its powerful new game engine, Slipspace.

Also worth mentioning in this category: Call of Duty Black Ops 4. If you’re still interested in Call of Duty at this point, you probably already know everything you need to about the franchise.

If You Like it Dark—Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

In recent years, From Software has come out with some of the darkest and most visually twisted graphics in their RPG games. Somehow, it always looks beautiful, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is no exception.

From’s two biggest hits have been Dark Souls and Bloodborne, which both deeply examined the spirit of the dungeon-crawler game. Whereas Souls took on medieval fantasy and Bloodborne drew heavily from Victorian goth, Sekiro sticks its roots firmly in the shadowy history of Japanese ninjas.

The trailers suggest a universe From Software has been comfortable telling its stories in, and we can’t complain. Expect Sekiro to hit shelves early in 2019.
