7 Tips For A Safer And More Enjoyable Sinulog 2018

Viva Pit Senyor! The annual Sinulog Festival is almost here. In just a few days, Cebu’s streets will once again come alive with colorful floats, religious processions, and star-studded concerts and events.

But as exciting as the festival is, it can be an overwhelming experience for those who have never experienced Sinulog. Before you plan to hit the streets and join the locals for the weekend, here are some tips to help you prepare.

1. Wear loose and comfortable clothing

Choose clothes you can move around easily in and wouldn’t mind getting soiled. Bring along an extra set in your day bag, just in case.

2. Wear a good pair of walking shoes

Prepare for a lot of walking, as the Grand Parade occupies several major roads and highways during the Sinulog weekend. Bring along a pair of shoe covers to protect your shoes from paint or mud stains.

3. Waterproof your gadgets

The Sinulog weekend will see several outdoor parades and street parties. Protect your gadgets and other small valuable items with a waterproof pouch.

4. Watch out for pickpockets

Although there are plenty of police along the parade route, you never know when or where a pickpocket will strike. Instead of a backpack, opt for a crossbody bag (like this anti-slash one from Pacsafe) so you can keep it in front of you and in sight at all times.

5. Have an umbrella ready

Pack a sturdy foldable umbrella in your bag to protect yourself from unpredictable weather conditions.

6. Party responsibly

The festival organizers approve alcohol providers during the event, but there’s no telling what other patrons might offer. It’s best to decline drinks offered to you by complete strangers and to control your alcohol intake.

7. Stay hydrated

Although there are vendors selling by the parade, they mark up prices by almost three times. Bringing along a reusable water bottle not only saves you money but also saves the environment.
