Hailed by many as one of the most forward-thinking superhero movies of the last decade, Black Panther opens today with much anticipation. We know it’s going to be an action-packed thrill ride, charged with social issues surrounding justice and equality—par for the course in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Before heading to the cinemas, check out these five tidbits on the upcoming flick and the famous hero of Wakanda.
The Life of the King

Director Ryan Coogler aims to successfully introduce T’Challa, the man behind the Panther’s mask, and the struggle he faces as the king of the fictional African nation, Wakanda.
The personal journey this massive responsibility entails must lead to some crucial developments that we can’t wait to see unfold.
Vibranium Suit

Captain America, also of MCU fame, carries a shield made of vibranium—a material mined in Wakanda.
The visually intimidating suit that Black Panther wears is also made of that same material. It truly is a piece fit for a warrior king.
The Strength of Women

Longtime fans of the series will know that in the early 90’s, one comic book writer introduced the all-female team of royal bodyguards and warriors called the Dora Milaje to the world of Black Panther.
From what we’ve seen, this squad of fierce fighters is playing a big part in the upcoming film, with powerhouse actresses training up to eight hours a day.
Decades in the Making

Several directors had toyed with the idea of bringing Panther to the big screen, with John Singleton (2 Fast 2 Furious, Boyz n the Hood) beginning initial work on a version in the 90’s starring Wesley Snipes.
Many scripts have been written for this movie, but real development began after the successes of other MCU titles in the late 2000s.
Fantastic Origins

Black Panther was at first a rival of the Fantastic Four in issue #52 of their comic book… released in 1966.
In that release, our hero actually defeats the four heroes in their own story. Perhaps it was a foreshadowing for the real-life box-office victory that would happen over forty years later.
